The Gardiner Family of Leeds County, Ontario

  also spelled Gardner  

Leeds County, Ontario, Canada was first surveyed in 1792 in preparation for the United Empire Loyalists settlers. In 1850, Leeds County merged with Grenville to create the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.

George Gardnier was born in 1743 in Vermont. He married Ruth Morley.

Ruth and George's children probably included:

John Gardiner (1766, married Luzina Lamb),
Catherine Gardiner (1768, married Peter Purvis),
Ann Gardiner (1776, married Justin Truesdell, Sr. and Cornelius Truesdell),
Sarah Gardiner (1777 married Samuel Morey and Philemon Pennock),
Jean Gardiner (1780 married Alexander McLean)
George Gardiner, Jr. (1782, married Anna Coleman),
Emily Gardiner (1798, married Isaiah Griffin, son of Samuel Griffin),
Nancy Gardiner (1800, married Henry Clow),
Martha Gardiner (married Alexander Kincaid).

George served with General Burgoyne. He was recruited from Ballston Spa, New York.

He was on the 1785 and 1796 Elizabethtown Township, United Empire Loyalist muster.

Brockville, Ontario was called Elizabethtown. The area was first settled by English speakers in 1785, when Americans who had remained loyal to the crown fled to Canada after the American Revolution.

The first European settlements in Ontario were after the American Revolution when 5,000 loyalists left the new United States.

George Gardiner, Jr. was born in 1782 and married Hannah Coleman.

Hannah and George's children included:

Rhoda Gardiner (1809, married John Buell, son of Samuel Buell),
Sally Gardiner (1810),
Harriett Gardiner (1813, married Vincent Lee),
Caroline Gardiner (1814, married Samuel Keeler),
Charles Gardiner (1816, married Sarah Booth),
George Gardiner (1818, married Harriet Booth),
Eliza Ann Gardiner (1824, married Amos Boice), and
Richard Gardiner (1826, married Mary Ann Turkington).

George was assessed in Yonge Township in 1805.

During the War of 1812, George Gardnier served in the Leeds County Militia as a sergeant.

James, Charles, George, Joseph, MD and Richard Gardiner appeared on the census lists of Yonge Township, Leeds County Ontario in the 1840s.

The Battle of the Windmill was in November, 1838. Loyalists defeated an invasion attempt by Hunter Patriots, led by  Nils von Schoultz, who were attempting to overthrow British rule. The battle was at a windmill two miles east of Prescott.

On February 7, 1813, the American army raided Elizabethtown (present day Brockville, Leeds County, Ontario). The Americans crossed the frozen St. Lawrence River and seized equipment, freed American prisoners, and captured Canadian men.

Mr. [George] Gardiners wife was a Morey, Samuel Morey having arrived in Upper Canada about the same time that the Pennock's did, also coming from the same part of Vermont.
